Book 9: Portobello

Book 9 is Portobello by Ruth Rendell.  This is not my favourite Ruth Rendell.

  • Another Rendell book with a quirky range of characters – a rich antique store owner with an addiction to sugar-free candy, Josh who wants to live in the dark, an ex-convict who now is Brother Gil -characters you will long remember.
  • I did not find the plot entertaining, though, and it was even boring on occasion.
  • What I like about the other Ruth Rendell novels I have read and the BBC films is that they end with a surprising twist. Not so with this one. Everything was too neatly tied up as to be unreal.
  • Don’t let my opinion of this book turn you away from Rendell.  She is usually good.
